How do you recognize silicones, parabens and sulphates in hair and beard care products?

Silicones, parabens and sulphates are common ingredients in care and styling products for your hair and beard. But it's better to avoid them.

How do you recognize silicone?

Silicones are found in products such as beard oil, hair care products, styling products and beard and hair shampoo. This ingredient provides shine, which is of course nice, but it also coats your skin and beard hair, preventing the other (good) ingredients from penetrating properly. Silicone is difficult to wash out, causing a build -up . The label doesn't just say the word 'silicone', that would be easy. No, you can recognize silicone by words ending in -xane, -col, -conol and -cone.

How do you recognize parabens?

You can encounter parabens in all care products and hair and beard styling. This ingredient ensures that the product has a longer shelf life, it is a preservative. However, there are other natural ingredients available. Parabens are easier to find on labels than silicones, you can recognize them by words ending in -paraben.

How do you recognize sulphates?

Sulfates are mainly found in cleaning products, such as hair and beard shampoo. This ingredient causes the product to foam and cleans (too) aggressively. On the label you can recognize sulfates by words/compounds ending in -sulfate and the abbreviations SLS and SLES.
